Activity – to discover personal preferences regarding colour

You will need

  • To gather together 7 small collections of everyday use objects in the colours of the rainbow (these will be used to paint stamp, so make sure they are cleanable!)
  • 7 bowls for everyday object stamper
  • one information label per child
  • paper stapler
  • string/wool
  • paper hole punch
  • Children will need
  • One ready assembled rainbow each
  • 7 bowls with poster paint in the colours of the rainbow
  • 7 strips of paper in varying sizes each.
1. Print the rainbow cloud template onto card and cut out (1 per child)
2. Cut many strips of paper in varying sizes (length and width) these will be for the rainbow colours to be paint stamped onto (7 per child)
3. With a paper hole punch, cut out two holes at the top so that the finished rainbow can be hung up to display the fact that the child has a preference in colour.
4. Have ready for the children 7 bowls of poster paint in the colours of the rainbow and 7 bowls (3-4 items per bowl) with everyday use objects in them, in the colour of the rainbow (eg – fork/spoon with coloured handle, egg cup, straws, beakers, toys (like bricks, cars etc)
5. Allow the child to paint stamp the 7 strips of paper individually, matching the everyday object colour to the colour of the paint.
6. Once the rainbow painting has been finished, examine all the colours together and discuss how the child feels about each one. Do they have a favourite toy in one of the colours, which one do they like the best. When child has decided (could take a while!!) which colour they like the most paint stamp the top part of the rainbow cloud holder (part the bird is holding up!) in that particular colour.
7.  Attach the information label to the front of the rainbow to show everyone which colour the child likes the most and ask parent/carer if they could display it proudly for their child at home!

Once the painted strips are dry (or wet!) staple each top to the bottom of the rainbow cloud holder.
Loop a piece of string/wool through the punched out holes and tie off to enable rainbow to hang.
