Activity – using paint as a tool for understanding the concept of sweeping up.
You will need
  • Paintbrushes
  • Photocopy of bear
  • Copy of the dustpan template and heavy card.
  • Sticky tac
Children will need
  • Large sheet of paper
  • Paintbrush with bear stuck to each one.
  • Variety of brightly coloured poster paints
  • Dish of sawdust – biscuit crumbs!

1. Photocopy the bear template on to brown paper or white and colour in if wanted,
cut out (can cover with plastic if wished)

2. Cut out the dustpan shape from heavy card,

3. Attach a bear with sticky tac to the lower edge of a normal paintbrush.

4. Offer the children a large sheet of paper and using a separate tool spread some
paint over the surface of the paper. Explain that Bear has been eating biscuits… and
dropped the crumbs all over the floor! Sprinkle the sawdust over the paint.

Bear knows that he must try to tidy things up but finds it quite difficult.

Can the children help him sweep things into small heaps and piles so that they can be
picked up with the dustpan?

Replace sawdust bits into tray and use again (if possible!)

Have a look to see what sort of coloured patterns are created in the swept paint!

Name_____________
Bear spilt biscuit crumbs
all over the floor.
So then he swept them
up again.
